This session, lead by Wendy Thorogood and facilitated by Dr Laura Edwards, is designed give you an opportunity to top up your Level 3 Safeguarding hours. Michael Roe, Consultant Paediatrician, University Hospital Southampton will be also be joining us for this session.

Fabricated or induced illness (FII) is a rare form of child abuse. It happens when a parent or carer exaggerates or deliberately causes symptoms of illness in the child.  The parent or carer tries to convince doctors that the child is ill, or that their condition is worse than it really is.  The parent or carer does not necessarily intend to deceive doctors, but their behaviour is likely to harm the child. For example the child may have unnecessary treatment or tests, be made to believe they're ill, or have their education disrupted.

FII used to be known as "Munchausen's syndrome by proxy" (not to be confused with Munchausen's syndrome, where a person pretends to be ill or causes illness or injury to themselves).

We are delighted to have Dr Michael Roe, to come and talk us through this difficult and extremely sensitive area. He will also cover the territory known as ‘perplexing presentations’. He will help us be alert to these presentations and talk through the latest guidance to help us navigate these extremely tricky cases.

It promises to be a fascinating insight into a complex area.

How to build up my safeguarding hours

Trainer

Wendy works locally and nationally and has worked with children, the NHS and in Safeguarding combined for more than twenty-five years. This interactive session for primary care staff, will look at the guidance, and discuss several challenging safeguarding dilemmas, to see how we can meet our statutory duties in practice.

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

BaNES Staff

Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES) Practices have given Wessex LMCs some of their training budget, to be used for their staff (not GPs) only.  To access this funding you must be working in a Practice in Bath or North East Somerset and not be a GP.

BSW Staff - Clinical

We are delighted that, thanks in part to the BSW (BaNES, Swindon & Wiltshire) Training Hub, and part the NHSE Investment in Continual Professional Development, certain eligible roles such as Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, working in Swindon and Wiltshire Practices, are able to attend this course fully funded.  Please see the full list of Included and Excluded staff in the table below.   Please do not use this option if: 1) You are in a role 'Excluded from the Scheme' (see table below)  2) You are a GP.  3) You work in any role, except GP, in Bath or North East Somerset; please use the 'BaNES Staff' option above instead.

You can see more information about the scheme by clicking on this link: BSW Eligible Staff @ August 2022

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
