Introduction

The course is ideal for Practice Nurses who are interested in providing holistic healthcare for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes. The focus is mainly on type 2 diabetes, as this accounts for around 90% of all cases.  The training programme consists of two interactive training days facilitated by an advanced nurse practitioner who specialises in long term conditions, including diabetes care. Attendees will be provided with resources and competencies relating to diabetes care and these can be used as a basis for being signed off and agreed by your employer and assessor. This is an introductory two-day course and nurses will be given resources to extend their reading around diabetes and grow confidence in diagnosing and managing diabetes in practice.

Aims

Day One 

  • What is diabetes? An overview of type I and type 2 and beyond
  • Prevention of diabetes
  • Diabetes – a disease of complications
  • Lifestyle interventions – what works?
  • Remission – what is it?
  • Medication – driving down the M21
  • Injectables – need to know information about insulin and GLP1s

Day Two

  • The annual review – how to ‘Keep Watching the ABC’
  • Testing, testing – measurement of blood glucose, HbA1c, renal function, lipids and blood pressure: what’s normal and what’s not?
  • Managing hypertension and dyslipidaemia in type 2 diabetes
  • Living with diabetes – resources to help HCPs support people living with diabetes
  • Sick day rules
  • Medicolegal and ethical issues in the management of diabetes. Advice from an expert witness!

Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Recognise diabetes as a condition of complications
  • Implement timely and evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes
  • Address the specific needs of people living with diabetes in a person-focused way
  • Provide support and guidance to optimise quality of life

Trainer

Bev has a clinical role as a nurse practitioner for long term conditions at Mann Cottage Surgery in the Cotswolds. She has worked in general practice since 1984 in both rural and urban practices. As a nurse prescriber she has a particular interest in the pharmacological management of long term conditions. 

Beverley is the current editor in chief for the Practice Nurse Journal as well as a regular contributor to magazines such as the British Journal of Primary Care Nursing and the British Journal for Cardiac Nursing.
