Introduction

This interactive session, is aimed at the GPN and the experienced HCA (whose job role and scope includes Leg Assessment/ Doppler). The content includes assessment of the patient with a leg condition/ulcer and those at risk of ulceration. We will also look at the elements and importance of that holistic assessment plus early risk recognition of signs and symptoms, followed by interactive clinical skills session to  undertaking a Doppler test.

Aims

The session will cover:

  • Principles, rationales and core elements of assessing legs and common conditions.
  • Introducing the updated national plan for best practice (NWCSP)
  • Recognising atypical ulceration
  • Practical demonstration of handheld Doppler test
  • Discussion of handheld v automated Doppler (NICE Guidelines, 2023)
  • How to translate the Assessment/Doppler into appropriate care planning
  • The importance & eligibility of compression post Assessment (note-only includes compression in relation to Doppler. (see separate compression session)
  • Signposting of when and who to refer
  • Pathway to competency guidance
  • Scenario discussion
  • Q and A’s

A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.

Objectives

Following the session, the clinician will have information and resources to gain a basic knowledge of, and skills for planning/treatment and referral, post assessment. This will be centred on the new National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) Lower Limb Recommendations (2023) particularly in relation to discovery, assessment, outcomes and its impact in Primary Care.

NB: The session will not deem the learner 'competent'. The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available.

A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight - AHPs & Nurses

We are delighted that NHS South East have agreed to fund this course for all AHPs & members of the Nursing Team working in Practices in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. To access this funding you must be an AHP or member of the Nursing Team working in a Practice in Hampshire (excluding North East Hants) or the Isle of Wight.

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
