Introduction

This half day practical course is aimed at the competent GPN or experienced HCA already working within the Primary Care Leg Ulcer and Wound care arena. The focus is to update, enhance and support good practice by sharing new ideas and current thinking.

Aims

The session will use a practical based approach to the latest key points on the above, using core current/latest guidelines, new practical ideas/skills for Doppler/wound care/compression products, plus practical tips, including sharing ideas and experiences. At the end there will be time for a ‘free mic’/ open discussion.

Examples of what will be covered:

  • Doppler update - automated v handheld machines (NICE Guidance), updated National Leg Care Strategy recommendations, ‘compression without Doppler’ etc, complex clinical picture/unreliable ABPI results
  • Compression update - how to choose what compression, new compression terminology, DVT, chronic oedema, importance of made to measure hosiery, advocating supported self-care strategy.
  • Dressings/ Wound Care update – new products, wound biofilm/infection management, dressing ‘problems’

Objectives

On completion of this course the practitioner will be able to:

  • Understand and incorporate relevant new learning to their practice regarding leg ulcers/leg conditions and wound care
  • Interact with the group, and the trainer, to discuss any clinical issues relevant to the topics
  • Access the evidence base/resources and learning to support changes in practice.

NB: The ‘refresher’ session will not be part of a ‘pathway to competency’

A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.

Trainer

Denise Woodd best

Denise has been involved in Chronic Wound Care and leg ulcer management since the 1990’s, and since 2013 she has been working independently, primarily around Practice Nursing with the registered and unregistered practitioners regarding education, competency achievement, and seeing complex patients to support diagnosis and care planning.  She still works clinically within Portsmouth CCG Primary Care, and sees patients if needed in the acute sector, specialist units such as Vascular and Dermatology, and in the Community.

Denise is currently involved in reviewing compression hosiery for the Hampshire Formulary Inclusion, NICE Expert Group for antimicrobial solutions, and driving forward all the exciting changes from the National Wound Care Strategy to push leg care forward and improve outcomes.

Please note this session will NOT be recorded

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight - AHPs & Nurses

We are delighted that NHS South East have agreed to fund this course for all AHPs & members of the Nursing Team working in Practices in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. To access this funding you must be an AHP or member of the Nursing Team working in a Practice in Hampshire (excluding North East Hants) or the Isle of Wight.

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
