Introduction

For many GPs the death certification process and regulations relating to it provide added stress and confusion to an already unmanageable workload. Legislation around death certification, registration and coronial referrals, have struggled to keep up with the reality of the way we now work. Temporary changes to the regulations during the Covid 19 pandemic were welcomed as pragmatic and sensible, but some of these have now been reversed, and this has only added to the confusion felt by many of us when we are faced with completing an MCCD, cremation form or considering a referral to the coroner.

The statutory introduction of Medical Examiners (MEs) into Primary Care (which has now been delayed to April 2024 ) will bring about changes to the way in which non-coronial deaths in the community are investigated and certified, whilst aiming to put the bereaved at the centre of the process and increasing transparency and accountability. The role of the Medical Examiner has been created through the Health Care Act.

Being called to give evidence at a coronial inquest is something that most GPs will never have experienced. It is not surprising that many GPs find the prospect and practicalities of this very stressful.

Aims

This workshop aims to provide anyone likely to be involved with the death certification and registration process, or coroners’ inquests, an overview of the current system and relevant legislation.  We aim to demystify the process and in turn hope to reduce the anxiety and stress that can be associated with it.  Our various speakers will provide practical advice on how to navigate the death registration and coronial system and will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Objectives

We hope that by the end of the workshop, you will feel more confident in your understanding of the death certification process and the roles of the Medical Examiner and Coroner and will be better equipped to deal with the processes involved whilst continuing to provide compassionate care to your patients and their families during this difficult time.
