Introduction

This course is an opportunity for any new Health Care Assistants working in General Practice to increase their skills and competencies in clinical practice.  In addition, this course can be used as a refresher for existing HCAs who would benefit from a new set of competencies for clinical skills.

Following up on the two core days, there will be another opportunity to refresh and consolidate skills in a half day zoom workshop. (It is important you attend all sessions, 2.5 days)

Aims

The interactive two days face to face training will cover several core subjects and provide a competency framework for each area of learning to complete with mentorship back in the workplace. Using a blend of resources such as quizzes, case studies and group discussion, the teaching will be both fun and informative.

Objectives

Each HCA who attends the course will receive their own personal Development Portfolio and induction framework that they can use as a working document to store their evidence of learning. This will become invaluable as their growing skill set show cases their contribution to General practice.

Prior to this course the HCA will receive a Preceptorship document as a working tool to enable some in -house development and prepare them for the course. Please bring this document with you to the course.

Trainers: Julia Judd/Julia O'Mara

Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long term conditions. As her career developed she later extended her role becoming a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber.

During this time Julia has worked as a Clinical Matron for health and well-being across both primary care and adult mental health services, introducing physical health educational programmes for mental health clinicians and developed training modules for NVQ qualifications specific to mental health. This innovative role culminated in a prestigious Nursing Times award in 2008 and a further nomination in 2009.

Julia continues to work as a Nurse Practitioner in a large inner city practice in Portsmouth City, maintaining her own professional skills and acknowledging the increasing demands and burden placed on Primary Care services.  Julia remains passionate about nurse training and education, enjoying both the challenges and rewards that this brings. Along with her business partner their joint vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care.

Julia O'Mara: Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989, and has experience in many fields of nursing and teaching.

Julia has been working in Primary care in 1994 where she developed skills in practice nursing, long term conditions, first contact, history taking and assessment skills and independent nurse prescribing.

Past experience includes working within the NHS as a Modern Matron for General Practice under Solent NHS Trust developing clinical guidelines, protocols and policies, having an instrumental role in clinical governance and promoting high standards of care. As a modern matron Julia was a member of the Infection control advisory group and worked with practices to identify priority areas for CQC and evidence for quality patient care.

Currently Julia has a leading role as The Nurse Advisor for Portsmouth City Clinical Commissioning Group. This role involves listening to the views of the nurses in the city and looking at ways to improve services and delivery of care. At a strategic level Julia manages and chairs the Professional Practice Nurse Forum, co-chairs the Non-Medical Prescriber’s Forum and has an instrumental role in practice nurse education and development through TARGET.

Through J2S Julia particularly enjoys providing training in areas such as Diabetes, Neurology, Dementia, Infection control and professional portfolio building/clinical governance. Julia works closely with her business partner Julia Judd and their joint vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
