Introduction
This introductory course is suitable for Practice Nurses and AHPs who are new to contraception and sexual health care. In order to get the most out of the course we would recommend reading the e-learning for Healthcare modules on Sexual and Reproductive Health – modules 2 and 3 for those new to the subject and 4 (emergency contraception) if you have time. If you are already familiar with contraception you may wish to cover these anyway, but we would recommend looking at Module 5 (Contraception: complications/side-effects) prior to the course. If you haven’t already used e-learning for healthcare you can register for free access.
Aims
Through a mix of lectures, small group work and case discussion, the course aims to give you the basic knowledge required to discuss the range of available contraceptive methods and carry out asymptomatic sexual health screening.
Objectives
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Consider diversity, sexuality, attitudes and values in demonstrating a non-judgemental service
- Have confidence in assessing patients who require contraception and sexual health care
- Discuss contraceptive methods, their mode of action, contra-indications, risks and benefits in order to carry out an effective contraception choices consultation
- Manage the repeat issuing of CHC, POP and Depo
- Understand when emergency contraception might be required and where and when to refer
- Have an understanding of how common sexually transmitted infections may present
- Be confident to take a sexual history and risk assessment
- Be able to perform an asymptomatic sexual health screen
Trainers
Fiona Sizmur Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Health
Fiona qualified as an obstetrician and gynaecologist in 2002 and then went on to subspecialise in Reproductive and Sexual Health where I have worked for the last 20 years, including 5 years working in fertility. Fiona is a trainer for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health delivering training to medical students, nurses, general practitioners and speciality trainees, on a 1:1 basis for the Faculty Diploma, letters of competence for coils and implants, in small group work, providing updates and courses, as well as speaking at conferences. She is also Training Programme Director for Speciality Training in the Region, and an Educational Supervisor. She also works clinically as a Consultant within Solent Sexual Health Services in the Basingstoke and Andover areas. Fiona’s aim is to support clinicians’ development through practical training programmes, thereby increasing the accessibility of high- quality contraception and sexual health advice for patients
Amber Truscott
Amber trained at Surrey University and qualified as a nurse in 2000. She has a background of working in Gynae and worked in Primary care for the last 12 years specialising in women’s health. Amber was the Senior Nurse Manager at a GP Partnership before taking on the role as Regional Nurse Manager for Hampshire. She is passionate about leadership and supporting people to lead high-quality services for our patients, and reach their full potential.
Amber's other passion is education and teaching, and is a Faculty Register Trainer. She set up contracts with Universities and the GP Practices to have student nurses for placements in the locality in which she works, which has been a positive experience as nurse educators are key in developing the future workforce.
Please note: this session will NOT be recorded
Subsidised Booking Options
Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes. By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds. It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.
All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area
Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer. This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.
BaNES Staff
Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES) Practices have given Wessex LMCs some of their training budget, to be used for their staff (not GPs) only. To access this funding you must be working in a Practice in Bath or North East Somerset and not be a GP.
BSW Staff - Clinical
We are delighted that, thanks in part to the BSW (BaNES, Swindon & Wiltshire) Training Hub, and part the NHSE Investment in Continual Professional Development, certain eligible roles such as Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, working in Swindon and Wiltshire Practices, are able to attend this course fully funded. Please see the full list of Included and Excluded staff in the table below. Please do not use this option if: 1) You are in a role 'Excluded from the Scheme' (see table below) 2) You are a GP. 3) You work in any role, except GP, in Bath or North East Somerset; please use the 'BaNES Staff' option above instead.
You can see more information about the scheme by clicking on this link: BSW Eligible Staff @ August 2022
Hants and IOW Nursing Team
Practices in Hampshire and IOW have been fully funded by HEE (Wessex) to attend this course. To access this funding you must be working in a Practice in Hants or IOW
Non Members
Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.
NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so. It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for. If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee. To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
ABPI - Sponsorship
This event complies with ABPI regulations by not providing excessive entertainment or recreation i.e. access to the golf facilities at the venue.
