This one-day course is for Health Care Assistants or nurses new to General Practice who will be undertaking phlebotomy within their role. It is also for anyone who wants to learn how to do phlebotomy (who isn't already an HCA or nurse). It covers both theoretical and practical aspects including demonstration and practice on training arms and pads.  This course will provide a certificate of attendance, competency work book for completion with observed practice and mentorship in practice and phlebotomy guidelines.

  • Locating difficult veins /bruising / problem solving

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session all participants should be able to:

  • Provide evidence of an update in competencies and knowledge of phlebotomy techniques in line with the National Occupational Standard NPSA SPN 14: Obtaining a Venous Blood Sample
  • Demonstrate safe practice reducing the potential for sample errors and needle stick injury.
  • Have an increased awareness on potential risks and techniques to avoid risk.

Resources for all delegates

Roger Hoke (Trainer) has published a new individual "working portfolio" to be distributed to all the delegates attending the course alongside the fantastic text book he has written.  This additional resource allows the delegate to have a documented record of their competencies and training courses and evidence of learning through sign off of competencies /quality assurance which are linked to the national framework.

Trainer: Roger Hoke

Roger Hoke, is a former Clinical Educator, university lecturer and author of ‘Phlebotomy’ and co-author of the European Phlebotomy Standard. He is an executive committee member of the National Association of phlebotomists and contributes to the Association of Clinical Biochemists to promote good phlebotomy practice to increase the quality of laboratory specimens.

In the past Wessex LMCs held a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  Unfortunately, due to the current financial conditions, these have not been made available to us for 2024/25 and we are therefore unable to offer any subsidised options for this course.
