Introduction
This morning course is aimed at all Advanced Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals, Nurse Practitioners and any other clinicians working in an extended role offering ‘on the day’ appointments for people with acute illness.
Aims
We will be looking at:
- Defining the term ‘red flag’
- The Clinician’s perspectives
- History taking including remote v face-2-face
- Multi-professional approach / escalation
- Safety netting
- Review mechanisms
- Clerking / clinical governance
- Looking at some common presentations in primary care
- Headache
- Back pain
- GI
- Respiratory
- Diabetes (no specialist knowledge needed)
- Neuro
- Chest pain
Objectives
The objective of this course is those working in minor illness clinics or ‘triage’ are able to to assess for, identify, and/or exclude, any red flags that might indicate serious illness requiring immediate action or referral
Trainer: Ewan Armitage
Ewan is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, based in primary care since 2016, and a paramedic by registration. He has worked across a number of sectors in the health service including the emergency services, Accident and Emergency, community setting and latterly, primary care where he has worked with the GP Forward View team in the North West region and set up a peer support group for paramedics.
Ewan holds a joint honours degree in Education and European Studies, Master’s degrees in Human Resource Management and Advanced Clinical Practice, and a post graduate Diploma in Professional Education. He was also one of the first paramedics in the UK to be awarded non-medical prescribing rights.
