Introduction

This half day update will cover all that nurses need to know in the way of children’s and adult’s immunisations and vaccinations.  This is a generic update aimed at clinicians who provide the full range of childhood and adult immunisations covered in the routine UK schedules. It will provide clinicians with the latest guidance on national immunisation programmes and demonstrate the tools and resources available to manage common incidents and educate patients.  Delegates are advised to have attended annual resuscitation training, which should include anaphylaxis care.

Aims

We will cover the recommended topics for annual immunisation update training within the National Minimum Standards:

  • Current issues in vaccination
  • Recent epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases
  • Any changes to the National Immunisation Schedule
  • Any changes to legislation relevant to vaccination
  • Anaphylaxis recognition and management
  • Review of current practice and identification of areas for improvement

Plus we will have a Q&A session for commonly encountered problems in practice

The training can be supported in practice using the excellent Royal College of Nursing Competency document (page 15) for self-assessment.

Objectives:

This course meets Public Health England’s National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training and includes any new and upcoming changes.

Trainer: Sharon O'Farrell

Sharon is a passionate advocate for the art and science of public health. She discovered her true calling in the field of nursing while pursuing the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing qualification in 2016/17. Her fascination was ignited by the profound evidence demonstrating that, after clean water, immunizations have had the most significant impact on global health and have saved countless lives.

With a background in adult nursing and midwifery, Sharon further expanded her expertise by becoming a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. From 2021 to 2022, in the capacity of a Public Health Development Nurse, Sharon played a crucial role in supporting, training, and supervising health professionals and volunteers involved in the COVID vaccination and flu programs. Her passion extends to facilitating training and providing guidance to individuals seeking to enhance their inquisitive and reflective skills.

Please note this session will NOT be recorded

Subsidised Booking Options

Wessex LMCs hold a number of funds for different organisations, specifically for training purposes.  By using these funds, many of our 'members' are able to access training without direct recourse to Practice Funds.  It is important that you select the appropriate funding option in the booking process, so that we can assign your booking to the correct funding stream, and here is some guidance to help you decide.

All GPs and Members of Staff working within GP Practices in the Wessex LMCs' catchment area

Please use this option if you are working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area and do not fit into one of the other options on offer.  This option may, or may not, have a cost attached.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight - AHPs & Nurses

We are delighted that NHS South East have agreed to fund this course for all AHPs & members of the Nursing Team working in Practices in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. To access this funding you must be an AHP or member of the Nursing Team working in a Practice in Hampshire (excluding North East Hants) or the Isle of Wight.

Non Members

Please use this option if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area.

NB: Unfortunately, some of your colleagues have previously booked places and not attended, preventing others from doing so.  It must be stressed that the above options are not ‘FREE’ they are funded from NHS monies, all of which must be accounted for.  If, therefore, you select one of these subsidised options, and do not attend, or fail to cancel more than 2 weeks in advance, you will be charged the full member delegate fee.  To cancel your booking please email: Lead@wessexlmcs.org.uk at least 14 days before the event date.
