Ferndale Medical Centre and its branch surgery in Maerdy is currently managed under the auspices of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTM UHB). We are keen for the practice to return to independent contractor status in 2023 and intend to award a permanent General Medical Services Contract (GMS) for the provision of primary health care within Ferndale and the neighbouring areas. The current list size is just over 7,500 patients. The practice area offers a challenging and rewarding environment providing care in an area of high deprivation. The surgeries are accessible from Cardiff in approximately 30 minutes via the M4 corridor / A470 carriageway.
Over the past few years the Health Board and practice team have worked extremely hard to turn this practice around by implementing new and improved ways of working practices, especially around internal systems and processes. The practice is well organised and high achieving. Patient services are provided from 2 purpose built premises approximately 1 mile apart. There is a strong team of existing support staff in place including a Practice Nurse, Pharmacist and Health Care Support Workers.
The Health Board supports the development of more collaborative health and well-being models, particularly in those areas of greatest deprivation. Dedicated resources will be made available to work with the successful applicant to develop and implement services which are non-medical and co-productive. Within Cwm Taf Morgannwg there are 8 clusters committed to the further development of sustainable primary care models and multi-disciplinary teams. As 1 of 10 practices that operate in the Rhondda cluster valleys area Ferndale benefits from access to a variety of cluster led services including physiotherapy and mental health support.
The procurement process is not looking for a single-handed GP to deliver this GMS contract. This is an exciting opportunity for an existing, or newly formed, multi-partner partnership to further develop a model of healthcare excellence. Informal enquiries are welcome, please telephone Paula Morgan on 01443 730539 or email paula.morgan@wales.nhs.uk

A Health Board panel will be convened to assess each business case, interview the applicants and make the final decision to award a new GMS contract.
