Salaried GP in Gender Service

An exciting opportunity is available to join the Cardiff and Vale Local Gender Service.

The Local Gender Service (LGS) model was established due to the widespread lack of capacity for GP practices to initiate or continue to prescribe hormones to transgender and non-binary patients endorsed by Gender Identity Clinics (GICs).

The Cardiff and Vale Local Gender Service accepts referrals from the All Wales Gender Service for individuals aged over 18 years for treatment initiation and monitoring for a period of up to 12 months, patients are then released to General Practice for management. The average caseload is currently 60 patients, with an average rate of 2-3 new patient per week.

The post holder will work in collaboration with the existing salaried GP. We are offering 2 sessions per week (we will consider two GPs working a session each). Ideally sessions would be on Thursdays to enable joint provision with the existing salaried GP, however, there is potential to consider an alternate day if required.

  • Completion of a holistic clinical assessment with regards hormonal transition including discussion on desired outcome, timescales, physical health needs
  • Initiation, titration and monitoring of hormones / hormone blockers according to their preferences from the choice of transdermal, oral and intramuscular options available
  • Being appreciative, supporting patients to overcome and address the high risk of discrimination, intimate partner violence, risky sexual behaviours, social isolation and neglect of medical and psychological conditions including obstructions to screening
  • Advising on a issues such as gamete storage, speech and language and surgical procedures relevant to patient need / desired outcomes
  • Acting as patient advocate -being involved in educational sessions with GPs, trans advocacy groups and support organisations. Communicating with GPs and relevant services.

Appreciating that this is an evolving specialism within Primary Care and the opportunity for education and training, this is a great opportunity for a GP who:

  • Has a keen/growing interest in this specialist field of medicine
  • Is skilled in holistic clinical assessment, spanning medical, psychological and mental health
  • Has excellent listening and communication skills
  • Enjoys working with others in a GP practice setting and creating effective working relationships with other departments to ensure the delivery of seamless care to patients.

Please note that this role is subject to Cardiff and Vale UHB Terms and Conditions and offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory receipt of references and enhanced DBS.
