Job summary

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our friendly and supportive Nursing Team, working alongside four Practice Nurses, four other Health Care Assistants, a Trainee Nursing Associate and our wider, multi-disciplinary team.

We are looking to make a full-time appointment but have the flexibility to offer full or part time (minimum 25 hours per week) over 4 or 5 days, depending on our chosen candidate's preferences. You will be required to provide enhanced access services working until 8pm approximately twice a month.

Ideally, we would like to find a candidate who has experience in a range of health care tasks and is keen to build on their existing skills and take on new challenges at Dyneley House Surgery.

We would also be able to support someone new to the role who wishes to train and work in a dynamic and supportive setting.

Main duties of the job

Heath Care Assistants work under the direct supervision of the Nurse Team Leader, assisting in the provision and delivery of patient care. The team provides a wide range of services such as ear care, wound care, chronic disease monitoring, ECGs and phlebotomy.

The Practice is lead by a team of 6 partners who work collaboratively with their clinical team of salaried GPs, ACPs, Practice Nurses, Clinical Pharmacist and HCAs. There is a large and supportive non-clinical team to ensure the Practice functions efficiently.

The Health Care Assistants are encouraged and supported to develop new skills or consolidate existing ones. The team is friendly, enthusiastic and inclusive.

Job description

Job responsibilities

New patient health checks, learning disability health checks and mental health checks.

Promotion of patients' health and social care needs including patient education and self-care.

Signposting patients to services to support and achieve optimum health.

ECG diagnostic and recording.

Phlebotomy.

Spirometry.

Ear syringing.

Wound care.

Vaccinations.

Group consultations.

Chaperoning duties.

Demonstration of diagnostic tools loaned to patients.

Demonstration of inhalers, peak flow and recording results.

Basic patient observations.

Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses.

Housekeeping checks on clinical areas as well as minor operations room.

Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment.

Vaccine/ cold chain storage, monitoring and recording daily.

Defibrillator monitoring and recording daily.

Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation.

Clearing and re-stocking GP consulting rooms.

Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations and women's health clinics.

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and well-being.

Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients.

Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being.

Other appropriate duties from time to time.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

GCSE grade A to C in English Language and Maths (or equivalent)

Desirable

NVQ Level 3 in Health Care

Experience

Essential

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience of providing excellent customer service.

Desirable

Experience of working as a Health Care Assistant in a General Practice or Hospital.

Working knowledge of TPP SystmOne.
