We currently have a need for a locum Practice Nurse for 1 - 2 days per week. The role would include performing duties as listed in the job description as below, however this is subject to negotiation, and we can be flexible for the right person should you not be skilled in all areas outlined.

Job Description

The post holder is responsible for performance to the Doctors & Practice Manager

It is a requirement of the post that at all times the post holder contributes to the smooth and efficient running of the surgery and strives to maintain good working relationships with other staff and attached staff working on or from surgery premises. The duties listed will be the responsibility of the practice nurses; either performed by all or shared equitably.

Summary of Role

You will be expected to carry out nursing and treatment duties compatible with your qualifications and training and in accordance with practice protocols.    

The post holder will also provide support to the doctors, the Practice Manager, the Senior Practice Nurse and colleagues in pursuit of the achievement of the contractual targets contained within the General Medical Services Contract.  

 

General duties

To be responsible to the needs of the Partners in the surgery as follows:–

 · Maintain high standards of nursing care to patients of the Practice, and to promote good health care

  • Assist doctors during their surgeries – e.g. chaperone, urgent electrocardiograph (ECG) etc.
  • Organise sterilisation of instruments using the CSSD procedures of the hospital
  • Be responsible for maintaining a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the nursing area and of the clinical equipment used
  • Monitor and maintain adequate supplies of drugs, clinical items and equipment
  • Monitor and maintain emergency drugs bag, plus doctors’ bags
  • Appropriately recording all treatment undertaken in the patient’s record on the computer system
  • Obtain and make use of health promotion material in clinics and for display purposes
  • Implement new and revised nursing procedures when necessary
  • Attend meetings, courses and update days as required
  • Use the NHS Net and other such relevant websites for the purposes of supporting the nursing role and giving advice to patients 
  • Assist in the orientation of new nurses joining the Practice with training and advice

Medical duties

  • Appraise wounds and other minor injuries, administer dressings; refer to a practice doctor or the hospital as appropriate
  • Take swabs, cervical smears, nail scrapings, etc.
  • Assist the doctors with minor surgical procedures
  • Monitor the blood pressure of patients and consider indications for referral back to the doctor
  • Perform ECG’s and report the findings to the doctors
  • Assist the phlebotomists with venepuncture
  • Administer adult and child vaccinations and immunisations
  • Administer injections for contraception, prostate cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and other such conditions as requested by the GPs or hospital clinicians
  • Conduct INR clinics, including patient dosing using INRstar4

Health Promotion

  • New patient checks
  • Postnatal checks
  • Discuss diet, alcohol, smoking, and other health problems with patients
  • Family planning
  • Travel advice
  • Cervical cytology; including monitoring and review of the results

Chronic Disease Management

  • Coronary heart disease  (CHD)
  • Smoking cessation
  • Diabetes and Podiatry
  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
  • Hypertension

Managerial­

To work with the doctors and Practice Manager to achieve the best possible service to patients –

  • Ensure that the relevant requirements of the GMS Contract are implemented within the nursing department.
  • Monitor, record usage and stock-take vaccines for the monthly prescription return
  • Discuss, implement and audit new nursing procedures
  • Participate in audit and inspection as required by the GMS Contract, including cervical cytology
  • Assist the doctors in the maintenance of relevant and accurate clinical histories
  • Assist in overseeing/supervision of Health Care Assistants

Communication

  • Team player and attention to detail skills are essential
  • Help and advise reception, and other non-clinical, staff on clinical matters
  • Advise patients on the telephone
  • Liaise with the other members of the Primary Health Care Team
  • Liaise with clinicians in secondary and intermediate care

 

Nursing staff will take on any other duties that are agreed to be appropriate.
